Learn how to read a METAR in Microsoft Flight Simulator with this complete aviation weather tutorial. In this step-by-step MSFS guide, we decode real-world weather reports from Amsterdam Schiphol (EHAM) to New York JFK (KJFK) so you can make professional approach, runway, and landing decisions on VATSIM or offline.

Most flight simmers misread basic weather strings—mistaking scattered clouds (SCT) for a legal ceiling, ignoring peak gust spreads during crosswind runway selection, or entering incorrect altimeter barometric pressures (inHg vs hPa). In this video, we break down aviation METAR decoding from scratch, including how to calculate gust padding for your reference speed (Vref) and decipher complex US automated remarks (RMK).

⏱️ Video Chapters: 00:00 - Intro 01:01 - The European baseline: EHAM 03:39 - Wind vector & peak gust calculation 05:46 - Prevailing Visibility & Light Rain 06:31 - The ceiling gate & dewpoint spread 07:34 - Altimeter settings & the remarks block

METAR Operational SOP Cheat Sheet: • Legal Ceiling vs Cloud Decks: Only Broken (BKN) and Overcast (OVC) constitute a legal ceiling covering more than 50% of the sky. Scattered (SCT) and Few (FEW) do not form an operational ceiling. • Peak Gust Planning: Never calculate runway crosswinds on sustained winds alone (e.g. 09015G23KT). Always calculate maximum crosswind and tailwind components against peak gusts (23 knots) before selecting your arrival runway. • Approach Speed Padding (Vref): When remarks show boundary layer turbulence (e.g. PK WND 10033/1626), protect your approach margin by adding half the gust spread (+4 knots) to your reference speed. • Barometric Altimeter Calibration: Altimeter settings in inches of mercury (A2964) convert to 1004 hPa. Flying on standard pressure in low pressure areas places your aircraft almost 300 feet below indicated altitude. Always sync baro settings across both pilot displays in the Airbus A320neo. • Deciphering Remarks (RMK): - AO2: Automated observation station with precipitation discriminator. - PK WND: Historical peak wind direction, speed, and Zulu timestamp. - SLP: Sea Level Pressure in tenths of a hectopascal (SLP038 = 1003.8 hPa). - T-Group: High-resolution temperature and dew point reading to the tenth of a degree. - Dollar Sign ($): Ground station sensor maintenance alert (data remains valid).
