Stop Turning Every Light ON! Aircraft Lighting & Lineup Guide | MSFS

·5:56·375 viewsDeveloped with YouTubeDeveloped with YouTube

Flipping on every exterior light switch the second you spawn on the ramp isn’t just unrealistic—to air traffic controllers and approaching traffic, blazing landing lights mean high-speed runway movement. In real-world aviation and on networks like VATSIM, improper light discipline creates dangerous glare, active collision hazards, and immediately marks you as an amateur.

Whether you're flying the fly-by-wire Airbus A320 or hand-flying a classic Cessna 172, this step-by-step tutorial breaks down the professional lighting flow from the hold-short line to climb-out. Learn the critical operational distinction between "Line Up and Wait" and "Cleared for Takeoff," plus the non-negotiable 5-second "Deadly Three" survival sweep across your compass, transponder, and pitch trim before your throttles ever hit TOGA.

Exterior Lighting & Lineup SOP Cheat Sheet:
• Ramp & Taxi: Nav/Position ON, Beacon ON before engine start (alerts ground crew of live props/turbines), Taxi light ON. Strobes and Landing lights remain OFF.
• Crossing the Hold Short Line: Strobes ON the split second the nose gear crosses onto active runway pavement. Never activate strobes on taxiways or behind other aircraft.
• Line Up and Wait (LUAW): Strobes ON, Runway Turnoff lights ON, Taxi light as required. Main Landing Lights stay OFF to signal stationary runway occupancy without blinding inbound pilots on final.
• Cleared for Takeoff: Both Landing Lights toggled ON. Takeoff roll begins.
• The 5-Second Instrument Sweep:

Runway Compass Check: Verify PFD compass rose matches assigned runway heading within 4°.

Transponder to TA/RA: Activate TCAS collision avoidance radar (essential for live traffic and VATSIM).

Pitch Trim in the Green: Ensure trim is verified within takeoff band to prevent unrecoverable stalls on rotation.
• 10,000 Ft Cutoff: Landing and Runway Turnoff lights OFF/Retracted passing through 10,000 ft MSL. Nav and Strobe lights remain illuminated until clearing the active runway after touchdown.
